The verb schlafen is irregular in the present tense. Like many other irregular verbs, it changes the stem vowel in the second and third person singular forms (du and er/sie/es).
schlafen to sleep
ich schlafe
wir schlafen
du schläfst
ihr schlaft
er/sie/es schläft
sie schlafen
Brummbär
He, Chef, warum ist Schlafmütz nicht bereit? Schläft er immer noch?
Doc, why is Sleepy not ready yet? Is he still sleeping?
Chef
Ja, alle die anderen Zwerge schlafen immer noch. Wozu sollten sie bereit sein?
Yes, all the other dwarves are still sleeping. What should they be ready for?
Brummbär
Wozu??? Wir müssen in 15 Minuten doch zur Arbeit gehen! Und sie schlafen den ganzenTag!
For what??? We have to go to work in 15 minutes after all! And they sleep away the day!
Chef
Sei Ruhig, Brummi, es ist doch das 21. Jahrhundert, und wir arbeiten nur 35 Stunden in der Woche. Heute ist Sonntag. Warum schläfst du nicht ein bisschen weiter? Du könntest dich endlich mal auschlafen!
Relax, Grumps, it's the 21st century, after all, and we only work 35 hours a week. Today is Sunday. Why don't you sleep a bit longer? Perhaps you could have a proper sleep finally!
Helpful hint: in a dictionary, irregular verbs are marked as irreg. They are usually listed in the back of the dictionary, with their irregular forms (some verbs are irregular in the past tense, but not in the present tense, etc.).
