Cases:Der Genitiv

The genitive case is dying a slow death in the German-speaking countries, especially in spoken language where it is being replaced by the dative case. Nevertheless, it's important for you to know about the genitive case because you will still encounter it in writing and you will need to be able to recognize it.

Proper nouns

The genitive case describes possession and can be signaled by an -s suffix at the end of proper nouns, without the apostrophe (like in English: Little Red Riding Hood's).

Der Jäger mag Rotkäppchens Großmutter! The hunter likes Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother!
Er geht täglich an Großmutters Haus vorbei. He goes by grandmother's house every day.
The hunter likes Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother

General nouns

With any other noun that is not a proper name, the genitive is formed by changing the preceding article; this is also how the accusative or the dative case is indicated. In addition, masculine and neuter nouns receive an -s suffix at the end of the noun. BUT if the masculine or neuter noun is one syllable long, it usually gets an -es.

Kann er das Herz der alten Frau gewinnen? Can he win the heart of the old woman?
Wird er am Ende des Märchens mit seiner Geliebten bis in alle Ewigkeit zusammen sein? At the end of the fairy tale, will he be together with his beloved for ever and ever?
Und die Großmutter? Gefällt ihr das lebhafte Interesse des Jägers? And the grandmother? Does she like the lively interest of the hunter?
Ja! Sie findet diesen Ablauf der Handlung viel aufregender als den alten, wo ihre einzige Rolle war, krank zu sein. Yes! She likes this development of the plot much more exciting than the old one, where her only role was to be sick.

And a few exceptional nouns (of course)

A handful of masculine nouns and one neuter noun in German take not an -s suffix but instead an -ns.

der Buchstabe letter of alphabet des Buchstabens
der Gedanke thought des Gedankens
der Glaube belief des Glaubens
der Name name des Namens
der Wille will as in willpower, intent, wish des Willens
das Herz heart des Herzens
Obwohl die Gebrüder Grimm ihre Entscheidung nicht unbedingt akzeptiert hätten, weiß die Großmutter im Grunde ihres Herzens, dass sie mit dem Jäger ausgehen muss! Man lebt nur einmal ... oh, ok, ok, vielleicht auch zweimal. Although the brothers Grimm wouldn't have accepted her decision necessarily, the grandmother knows in the heart of hearts that she must go out with the hunter! You only live once ... ok, ok, twice.

Genitive prepositions

The genitive case is also used with several prepositions: (an)statt, trotz, während, and wegen.

Eines Tages kommt der Jäger, um seine Geliebte zu besuchen, aber statt der Großmutter findet er den Wolf im Bett vor! One day the hunter comes to visit his beloved, but instead of the grandmother, he finds the wolf in the bed!
Trotz der Wut und Angst, die er fühlt, versucht er ruhig zu bleiben. In spite of the rage and fear he feels, he tries to stay calm.
Das dauert aber nicht lange, und während der nächsten zwei Stunden schneidet der Jäger dem Wolf den Bauch auf, packt ihn voller Steine und schaut zu, wie die Bestie in einem kleinen Bach versinkt. Ziemlich hektische zwei Stunden! That doesn't last long, though, and during the next two hours the hunter cuts open the wolf's stomach, packs it full of stones and watches as the beast sinks into a little creek. Quite a busy two hours!
Wegen des nahenden Unglücks wird Großmutter plötzlich viel kühner. Because of/Due to the near disaster, grandmother suddenly becomes much more adventurous.

Partitives

When using expressions to describe a part of something (e.g., half of, a quarter of ...), German uses the genitive case. Some of the most common examples are die Hälfte (half), das/ein Drittel (third), das/ein Zehntel (a tenth), ein Teil (part), das/ein Viertel (quarter), das Dreiviertel (three quarters), der Prozentanteil (percent).

Der Jäger schaut zu, wie das Wasser den Wolf wegträgt. Als er ins Haus zurückkommt, ist Dreiviertel des Weins schon weg! The hunter watches as the water carries the wolf away. When he comes back to the house, three quarters of the wine is already gone!
Der Jäger gibt der Grossmutter die Hälfte des Brotes und hofft, dass das ihren Blutalkohol ein bisschen niedriger macht. The hunter gives grandmother half of the bread, and hopes that that will help bring down her blood alcohol level.
Three quarters of the wine is gone

Broad time expressions

Finally, the genitive case is used to describe non-specific time periods (these phrases come up all the time in fairy tales):

Rotkäppchen schreibt in ihr Tagebuch: Eines Tages gab es ein kleines Mädchen ... Little Red Riding Hood writes in her diary: Once upon a time (lit: one day) there was a little girl ...
Eines nebligen Morgens ging es im Wald spazieren. One foggy morning she went for a walk in the forest.
Dieser Tage würde es den Wolf nicht treffen. Es gibt keine Wölfe mehr in deutschen Wäldern. Sie wurden alle verjagt ... Naja, Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude! These days she would not meet the wolf. There are no more wolves in German forests. They were all chased out ... Oh well, malicious pleasure is the sweetest pleasure!

Definite and Indefinite articles in the genitive case

Articles in the accusative case (there is no equivalent of the indefinite article in the plural, since, just like in English, you can't say 'a lentils'):

the a/an none
masculine des Jägers eines Jägers keines Jägers (hunter)
feminine der Großmutter einer Großmutter keiner Großmutter (grandmother)
neuter des Mädchens eines Mädchens keines Mädchens (little girl)
plural der Stunden Stunden keiner Stunden (hours)

Übung 1

After this exciting day, a local reporter interviewed the hunter, grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood.  The reporter took notes, but now the notes need to be edited.  Re-write the following slashed sentences into regular ones.  In addition to the formation of the genitive, pay attention to verb conjugations and the word order as well!  Watch out for question #10 – it's very tricky!
