Miscellaneous:Modalpartikeln
Modal particles are an uninflected part of speech that emphasize a particular aspect of a message and convey the speaker's mood or attitude towards this message. Since they are an essential part of informal spoken German, it is crucial to learn how to use the modal particles appropriately!
| You better not eat the entire roof, Hänsel! You'll be sick! |
Hänsel | Also darf ich von deinem Fenster essen? | So may I eat from your window? |
Gretel | Aber klar! Ich bin jetzt satt. | (But) of course! I'm full now. |
The German modal particles can be very tricky to translate. A particle can mean one thing in one context but something entirely different in another context. The list below describes the most frequently used particles and the variety of ways they can be used.
Aber
die böse Hexe | Kinder! Das ist aber eine Überraschung! | Children! What a surprise! |
Also
| Well, dear children, how do you like my little house? Tasty, isn't it? |
Hänsel | Ja, es schmeckt sehr gut, danke. | Yes, it tastes very good, thank you. |
| (To herself) Haha! So I can get children with this clever trap after all! |
| Would you like to come in and get something to eat? If not, it doesn't really matter. |
| Um ... thank you for the invitation, ma'am, but we should find the way home before it gets dark again. |
| Yes, we are still very far away. |
| Are you really sure you don't want to come in? |
Denn
Gretel | (Zu Hänsel) Was meinst du denn, Hänsel? Sie kann nicht gefährlich sein, oder? | (To Hänsel) So, what do you think, Hänsel? She can't be dangerous, can she? |
Hänsel | (Zu Gretel) Hast du denn deinen Verstand verloren?! Wir kennen sie nicht! | (To Gretel) Have you lost your mind?! We don't know her! |
Doch
| (To Hänsel) That's true. But strangers like her can't possibly be dangerous. |
Hänsel | (Zu Gretel) Doch, sie könnten! | (To Gretel) Yes, they could! |
Eben
| (To Hänsel) Hänsel, how could she be dangerous? She is ancient - older than our grandparents! |
Hänsel | (Zu Gretel) Das ist es eben! Hexen sind steinalt! | (To Gretel) That's exactly it! Witches are ancient! |
| (To Hänsel) She is just an old woman who loves children. |
Eigentlich
| Ahem, have you actually decided, or do you want to talk about it all day? |
Gretel | Eigentlich, gnädige Frau, kommen wir gerne herein! | Actually, ma'am, we would love to come in! |
Halt
| Don't worry about my brother, ma'am. That's just the way he is - always skeptical. |
| No problem! (To herself) Hehe, I'm used to such pesky boys! |
Irgendwie
... | (To herself) Hmm, this lady is weird somehow, but she is offering us shelter and a warm meal. ... |
Ja
Three main functions:
1. Expresses surprise (like doch)
2. Expresses a sense of warning or urgency
3. Signals something is obvious
Often used in combination with wohl
Das wäre ja gelacht! | (Expresses certainty that something will succeed) |
Das ist ja wohl die Höhe! | That's outrageous! |
Sie wissen ja, wie das ist. | Well, you know how it is (assuming it's obvious) |
| You two must be starving! Sit down at the table, and I'll prepare the meal. |
Mal
| Say, my dear boy, would you like something else to eat? You didn't eat much. |
Hänsel | Nein, danke. Ich habe mich satt gegessen. | No, thank you. I've eaten my fill. |
die böse Hexe | Red keinen Quatsch! Probier mal die Knödel. | Don't talk nonsense! Try the dumplings once. |
Nun
| (To Gretel) I can't eat any more! |
Gretel | (Zu Hänsel) Sei nett, Hänsel. Ältere Leute sind nun mal so. | (To Hänsel) Be nice, Hänsel. That's just how elderly people are. |
| What (on earth) is taking so long? Don't you like the food? You'd better not think you can just let it go to waste! |
| (To Hänsel) Just eat, Hänsel. It makes elderly people happy when you take a second helping. |
Schon
Hänsel | Gnädige Frau, ich habe schon zwei Portionen gegessen. Dies wäre meine dritte! | Ma'am, I've already eaten two helpings. This would be my third! |
| What an ungrateful wretch! Now you'll see what I really am - an evil witch, haha! |
Gretel | Um Himmels willen! Du hast Recht gehabt, Hänsel! | Oh my heavens! You were right, Hänsel! |
Hänsel | Liebe Schwester, habe ich mich schon mal geirrt? | Dear sister, have I ever been mistaken? |
Gretel | Nein, noch nie. | No, never. |
Hänsel | Nur keine Sorge, Gretel. Wir werden schon entkommen. | Don't worry, Gretel. (I'm sure) we'll escape. |
Die böse Hexe | Jetzt komm schon, Hänsel! Dein Käfig wartet auf dich! | Now come already, Hänsel! Your cage is awaiting you! |
| You'll never escape from me - you're just children! |
| That's certainly true, but we're very intelligent and resourceful children! |
Gretel | (Zu Hänsel) Was kannst du schon machen, wenn du in diesem Käfig bist? | (To Hänsel) What can you do if you're in this cage? |
Hänsel | (Zu Gretel) Die Frage ist: was kannst du machen?! | (To Gretel) The question is: what can you do?! |
Total
| Hmm, why aren't you gaining weight, boy? I don't understand it! |
| (To Gretel) This witch is totally blind! Instead of my finger, I always extend a little bone! |
Überhaupt
Two main functions:
1. Emphasizes that something is generally the casedie böse Hexe | Nach vier Wochen ist Hänsel überhaupt nicht dicker geworden! | After four weeks Hänsel has not become fatter at all! Gretel, fetch the water - I can't wait any longer for my meal. |
Gretel | Überhaupt nicht, du scheußliche Hexe! | Absolutely not, you horrid witch! |
Wohl
Two main functions:
| Gretel, crawl into the oven and see if it's heated well. I have to bake the bread for dinner! |
Gretel | Wie komme ich da hinein? Ich weiß es nicht. | How do I get in there? I don't know how. |
| (You) stupid goose! You can certainly see that the opening is big enough. Children these days ... they are so spoiled! |
| That's true, but my brother and I are different than the average children! (Gretel gives the witch a push and she falls into the oven.) Haha, we fooled you! |
Zwar
| Hänsel, this fairy tale was just too brutal. |
| You're right. It's true it was brutal, but it was fun, too! Look at how much gold we have now! |
