Adjectives:Adjektive nach Ein-Wörtern
Predicate adjectives
While predicate adjectives are not part of the ein-word adjectives, it is important to discuss briefly their position and use. Predicate adjectives take the most basic, unaltered form of the adjective, and don't take any endings unless they are in the comparative or superlative forms [link to comparative and superlative]. These adjectives are linked to the nouns they describe with a verb such as sein, werden, or heißen.
Der Esel war schon alt. | The donkey was already old. |
Das alte Tier wurde schwach. | The old animal got weak. |
Der Meinung seines Herren nach wurde er einfach untauglich für die Arbeit. | According to his owner, he simply became unsuitable for work. |
Attributive adjectives after ein-words
Adjectives that follow indefinite articles (ein, eine, keine, keinen, etc.) or the other ein-words: mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer (in any case), and precede the nouns they describe, take so-called strong endings. These endings apply whether the adjective is in the basic form or in the comparative or superlative forms. Remember that there is no plural form for the indefinite article ein.
Der Esel wusste, dass kein guter Wind wehte, und lief weg. | The donkey knew that an ill wind [lit: no good wind] was blowing and ran away. |
Als er ein kurzes Weilchen gelaufen war, sah er einen alten Jagdhund auf dem Weg liegen. | When he had gone a short distance, he saw an old hunting dog lying on the road. |
Der Hund war sehr traurig, denn er hatte seinen ehemaligen Herrn enttäuscht. | The dog was very sad, because he had disappointed his former owner. |
To determine the correct adjective ending, determine the gender of the noun the adjective describes (masculine, feminine, neuter or plural), then determine what case the noun is in the sentence or phrase (nominative, accusative, dative, or genitive).
Nominativ | Akkusativ | Dativ | Genitiv | |
Maskulin | ein alter Esel | einen alten Esel | einem alten Esel | eines alten Esels |
Feminin | eine alte Katze | eine alte Katze | einer alten Katze | einer alten Katze |
Neutral | ein altes Räuberhaus | ein altes Räuberhaus | einem alten Räuberhaus | eines alten Räuberhauses |
Plural | keine alten Tiere | keine alten Tiere | keinen alten Tieren | keiner alten Tiere |
Exceptions
Changes in the basic form
When adjectives that end in -el, -en, or -er in the basic form get an adjective ending, they drop the -e- before the final consonant and add the endings to this new form (see the example with dunkel).
Der Esel | Vergiss deine dunklen Gedanken und komm mit mir nach Bremen! | Forget your dark thoughts and come with me to Bremen! |
Colors
Der Esel | Ein paar Minuten später sahen wir ein rosa Funkeln - es waren die Augen einer lila Katze ... ne, ne, ne ... falsch! Es war eigentlich eine beige Katze und ein oranges Funkeln. | A few minutes later we saw a pink spark - it was the eyes of a purple cat ... no, no, no ... my mistake! It was actually a beige cat and an orange light. |
