Verbs:Das Futur
Verbs are used to describe actions. The future tense is used to describe actions that are going to happen sometime in the future, although modern German (especially spoken German) tends to use the present tense to express future actions (sometimes adding a future adverb of time, such as next week, next year, in two years, etc.).
Futur | Präsens | |
Schneewittchen wird in 2 Jahren promovieren. | = | Schneewittchen promoviert in 2 Jahren. |
Snow White will graduate in 2 years. |
Future forms
The future tense is formed by a conjugated form of werden and an infinitive verb.
Aschenputtel | Ich werde meine eigene Praxis haben. | I will have my own practice. |
die Hexe | Du wirst im Schloss keine weitere Therapie anbieten? | You won't be offering any more therapy sessions in the castle? |
werden english: will (future auxiliary verb) | |
ich werde | wir werden |
du wirst | ihr werdet |
er/sie/es wird | sie werden |
Future with modal verbs
With modal verbs, you still use the form of werden, and then add two infinitives: the original primary verb and the modal verb, as the following longing revelation from the evil queen illustrates:
original sentence | Ich frage meinen Spiegel jeden Tag: Wer ist die Schönste im Land? | I ask my mirror every day: Who is the most beautiful of all [in the country]? |
sentence with modal verb | Ich muss meinen Spiegel jeden Tag fragen! Ich kann einfach nicht anders! | I have to ask my mirror every day! I can't stand it! |
sentence in the future with modal verb | Nach der Therapie aber werde ich meinen Spiegel nicht mehr fragen müssen! | After the therapy, however, I won't have to ask my mirror everyday! |
In a subordinate clause, the auxiliary verb werden precedes both the original verb and the modal verb at the end:
Wenn ich meinen Spiegel nicht mehr werde fragen müssen, wird man mich endlich in Ruhe lassen - ich habe die Nase voll von diesem schlechten Ruf! | If I no longer have to ask my mirror, people will finally leave me in peace - I am sick and tired of this bad reputation! |
Warning: spoiler alert!
One of the main pitfalls for American learners of German is the difference between the English will/want to and the German wird/will.
die alte Hexe | Ich will wieder Kinder backen und essen! Aber nach diesen dummen Therapiestunden werde ich das nicht tun können! | I want to bake and eat children again! But after these stupid therapy sessions I will not be able to do that! |
die böse Königin | Du sollst das sowieso nicht tun, Heidrun! | You're not supposed to do that anyway, Heidrun! |
die alte Hexe | Aber ich will, ich will, ich will!!! Verdammt nochmal! | But I want to, I want to, I want to!!! Damn it! |
Aschenputtel | Tja, aber Sie werden das nicht tun! Sie werden in Zukunft keine Kinder essen! | Well, but you will not do that! You will not eat any children in the future! |
