Retro Russian is an extension of the Rockin’ Russian website featuring music videos from the Soviet period. The site was developed under the direction of Dr. Thomas Garza of the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, with the assistance of Yekaterina Cotey (captions, translations, media selection) and Kyle Mitchell (site development, editing).
Videos and songs are © their respective owners. They are provided here exclusively for fair use in education.
Select a video from the list at the bottom of the screen by clicking its picture. Clicking the right arrow will show more videos to choose from. Clicking the left arrow will show the previous list.
When the video loads it will begin to play. You can stop, pause, or seek a video by moving your mouse over it and clicking the buttons that appear. You can also adjust the volume or open the video in fullscreen this way.
To change which captions are displayed — an original Russian transcript, a literal English translation, or a colloquial English translation — click one of the flags to the right, or click the language shown in the top left corner of the video screen and choose a new language from the menu that appears. This can be done at any time.
While viewing video with Russian captions, clicking a word will pause the video and open the word’s entry in Rockin’ Reference in a new window. Your browser may ask you to confirm that you want to allow a popup the first time you click a Russian word.
