Ach Mensch! Wenn der blöde Prinz Schneewittchen nicht geküsst hätte, wäre sie nie wieder erwacht! Ich hätte die Schönste im Lande sein können! So ein Mist!
Oh man! If that stupid prince hadn't kissed Snow White, she would never have woken up again! I could have been the prettiest in the whole world! Crap!
Forming the past subjunctive: Konjunktiv II
Konjunktiv II in the past tense can be formulated in three ways:
with hätte + participle
with hätte + modal verb infinitive + verb infinitive
with wäre + participle
1. Past subjunctive with hätte
The past tense subjunctive is formed with the subjunctive form of hätte (conjugated according to the subject) plus a participle if the original verb (now in the participle form) is transitive (i.e., can take a direct object. It is also used with all modal verbs in the past subjunctive.
die böse Königin
Wenn ich den Apfel nur in Iocane-Pulver gekocht hätte! Oh, warte mal, das war ja eine andere Geschichte!
If I had only cooked the apple in iocaine powder! Oh, wait a minute, that was a different story!
Chef
Wenn wir nicht gearbeitet hätten, hätte die böse Königin Schneewittchen nicht alleine gefunden!
If we hadn't worked, the evil queen would not have found Snow White alone!
Brummbär
Ja, aber dann hätte unsere Geschichte keinen Sinn ergeben!
Yes, but then our story would not have made any sense!

2. Past subjunctive with modal verbs
hätte is also the auxiliary verb in combination with the modal verbs: dürfen, können, mögen, müssen, sollen, wollen, and to express politeness or describe hypothetical situations.
In general declarative sentences, the conjugated form of hätte comes in the second position, and the two verbs (the infinitive of the original verb + the infinitive of the modal verb) come at the end of the sentence. However, in subordinate clauses, the two infinitives still come at the end of the clause, preceded immediately by the conjugated form of hätte.
Wolfdietrich
Ich hätte nicht einschlafen sollen! Ich hätte auch den Jäger fressen können!
I should not have fallen asleep! I could have eaten the hunter too!
Wolfgang
Sei nicht so gefräßig! Du hättest diesmal nicht zurückkommen können, wenn du ihn gefressen hättest.
Don't be so greedy! You would not have been able to come back this time if you had eaten him.
Wolfdietrich
Ja, aber wenn ich ihn damals hätte fressen können, hätte ich nicht die Hexe um Hilfe bitten müssen! Und das hätte mir viel besser gefallen. Jetzt stehe ich ewig in ihrer Schuld!
Yeah, but if I had been able to eat her then, I would not have had to ask the witch for help! And I would have liked that much better. Now I am forever indebted to her!
3. Past subjunctive with wäre
The past tense subjunctive is formed with a conjugated form of wäre plus a participle if the original verb (now in the participle form) is intransitive (i.e., cannot take a direct object).
der Esel
